Single Madhes State ?

|
Dear friends,
Our country is in the initial phase of restructuring country so that all groups living in this land could feel that they are the real owners of this land, could live with prosperity and with pride of being born in this country. Of course, there are questions regarding discrimination of some groups, questions regarding inclusiveness and respect. During these all discussions, we should find a correct way, otherwise there is a chance that we will lose our national identity and sovereignty and will be in the list of “bad lucky” nations like Palestine, Kurd and many others. Recently, some agitating Madhesi parties have raised the demand of “Single Madhes State”. Here I want your attention regarding a“Single Madhes State” and why we should actively reject this idea.
What is the “Single Madhes State”?
It is a state in future Federal structure of Nepal which comprises whole Terai plain land from Mechi to Mahakali and from Indian border to Chure Pahad including some Pahadi areas which are now in so-called 20 Terai districts.
Why there should be no “Single Madhes State”?
There should be no “Single Madhes State” because:

1. It is not possible to make 1000 km long and about 25-30 km wide territory a “Single State”. It is not reasonable geographically and for administrative purposes.

2. It is not possible to make all plain lands a Single state and all hilly lands other States. Terai, plain land (Samtal) are not synonyms of Madhes.

3. In the history, there was no “Single Madhes State”, but rather Mithila, Tirhut, Abadh and Vojpura Rajya were there in different period of history in last 1000 years.

4. Culturally, there is no any Madhesi culture, but Mithila culture, Vojpuri culture and Abadhi culture, Muslim culture.

5. There is no single Madhesi Language, but people speak Maithili,Vojpuri and Abadhi languages. There will be a total nonsense when a “Single Madhes State” will have six official languages ( Nepali,Maithili, Vojpuri, Abadhi,Urdu, Tharu) or may be more?.

6. There could not be a “Single Madhes State”, as there could not be a “Single Pahade State”.

7. Terai is ethnically a mixture of vast majority different groups and it is entirely different in the east Jhapa to the west Kanchanpur (distance1000km). People of east and west have different culture; different festivals and and they speak in at least 10-12 languages.

8. Economically, 70% of industry lies in Terai and 48% population of the country live there. Making such a vast territory of economic and demographic importance a “Single State”, there will be no sense of dividing rest of the country (Pahad and Himal) in other 13-14 or more small states - thus the need for federal structure will then automatically vanish.

9. If whole Terai will be a “Single Madhes State”, then it will be a “heavyweight” among other smaller states of Pahad and Himal. In the view of that it will cover almost all border with India (Nepal depends on India in its trade 70-75% due to its geography), “Single Madhes State” will easily dominate the future Federal Nepal and other “tiny states” can easily be threatened and dominated when there will be questions regarding distribution of water resources (Drinking Water, Irrigation Projects), Hydroelectric Projects, National Highway, Railway and Division of Federal and State tax system)

10.The“heavyweight” Single Madhes will have strong influence on Federal politics as almost half of the population live in Terai, and this will make Central Federal government just puppets in the hands of Single Madhes .

11.We know Indian influence in Nepali politics, and of course we can imagine that influence on “Single Madhes State” thus making Nepal’s sovereignty more weaker than what we have now(very weak already). In this regard it is quite possible that it is an Indian agenda rather than Madhesi agenda. (“Take at first only half” policy of RAW in contrast to “take whole” policy used in the past in case of Sikkim and Bhutan)

12. As most of Madhesi people want equal rights, respect and opportunities ct in this country, they are Nepali, they love Nepal and are pride of being Nepali. They are aware of that and are only demanding respect and inclusiveness. Most of them are not concerned about Single Madhes, rather they are concerned about their rights and self-esteem and well-being of their society.

13. Making whole Terai a “Single State” will not solve the problem of restructuring Nepal rather it will create a vast majority of new ethnic problems which could lead to civil war like in Yugoslavia. In Terai, there is 33% Pahade and 7% Tharu population. Their respecting organizations (Tharu Kalyankari Sabha and Chure Bhawar Rastriya Ekta Party) have already threatened to go for agitations if government will fulfill the demand of “Single Madhes State”. Knowing the fact that different Madhesi organizations have launched armed war and many Madhesi Political parties have formed “Force” like “Madhesi Rakshya Bahini” and Chure Bhawar Ekta Party has formed its armed wing “Shanti Sena”, it is not difficult to calculate the consequences of such civil war. And being Terai that battle field, the biggest loser will be Terai and its people.

So dear friends, it is time to make your civil position clear and think about our country and our land. I know many of you have born in hilly areas and may be some of you have even not visited Terai. Being ethnically diverse, Terai may be a trouble region for Nepal in coming many years. Prosperity of our people and our country totally depend upon how we can handle this problem.
And your civil position has a great role in this regard.
Thanks.

regards,
Mr.Ramesh Nepali(wrtitten by Ramesh Nepali)

good and intresting analysis...
If there should be a single madesh state, it will not be the end of the problem, I guess there will be another demands for single weastern madesh state, central madesh state..., eastern madesh state....like like.......etc....

In fact, it is a biased analysis.
Do you think Nepal needs some 15-20 states with that many number of CMS , legislative assemblies, and a big herd of ministers. Nepal's economy doesn't allow for such a lavish set-up. Ideally it should be devided into 3-4 states and not more than that. Demand for a single Madhes state is to ensure equality in madhesis and to provide enough opportunities to them.

Hello sujit jee,
Nepal needs only one state'nepal'..., do not need more states like india...

There should be equal opprtunity for every nepali, not only for madeshi......
And there is already lot of opporunties for madhesis than others......

Nepal needs only one state "Nepal", it's very correct slogan Badriji, i very much appreciate it. And what happened now is "Aulo dinda Dudulno nilna Khojne Prabriti". Nepal should not be divided at all- no to federalism-- but if, we, the people of Nepal together already decided that we should go for federalism- then every ethnic group, every part of society have the same oppurtunity to make their own "small home" which we say as a state, where they can live with comfort. And in this hegemony of "Single Madhes" slogan there is the threatening "United WE Will Show You"- we are waiting for our terms. No there should not be single Madhes-
Division on Federal State should be the work of a commission comprised with specialists. Girija or Mahanta has no right on this matter at all.

Hey Ramesh, who told you Nepal means Pahade?? Why don't you understand about the mutualism required to mantain the harmony in Nepal. Both Madhesi and pahade should behave in such a manner that each other's sentiment is not hurt else it will invite further clash and unrest which is not good for Nepal. Just keep in your mind that Nepal is incomplete without either madhesi or pahade. we can prosper only when both come together or we are not very far from a civil war which will never end.

Ramesh Nepali said...

To Viplav: Your views are very good. I beg to the God that we all should have such views as of yours. But the reality is far from that. I dont know to which community you belong. And i dont think you are unaware of what is happening in the name of Madhes. If you dont know i have some examples here:1.)In Bhiman village, Dhanusha district, some men came in hundreds in five Tractors and tried to set ablaze a whole Pahade village.(It shows that-not one Jwala singh or J.K.Goit has gone mad, but many people of the Madhesi community has gone mad-look they are in hundreds in an organised way in tractors--- Pahade has never done such things of setting fire to whole village against Madhise)
2.) Pahades were demoralized and threatened during Madhes movement . Madhesi would come near to place where Pahade live and chant slogans like 'Madhes hamro bhumi ho, Pahade chor desh chhod'. The language rapidly descended from indecent to vulgar whenever they saw a female member of Pahade community.More than 125 Pahade families migrated from Kalaiya, Bara, to north and more than 200 from Birgunj since the Madhes movement.
3.)When enraged Madhesi protestors took off the Nepali cap of a 60-year-old man and put it under their feet, in Birgunj, local Pahades were shaken to their core.

What is happening in Terai is slow genocide of Pahade people.
So you see what they are doing with us and we are singing the song of harmony.
Our slogan should be: Friendship for Friendship, Hatred for Hatred. We should be very cautious to their activities and should resist every unfair activities(I have no intention to harm Madhesi unless they start first), only then they will be compelled to stop their criminal activities which is weakening our country.
Regarding Pahade in Nepal, yes they are the leading group of the country, they had made Nepal,I'm very proud to annouce it, why should I be ashamed? We have history of courage, bravity, honesty-- that we, yes we the brave Nepali- "the bravest among the brave and the most generous among the generous". Jai Nepal Aama !

Very good analysis by Ramesh jee and viplav sir,
"Nepal is incomplete without either madhesi or pahade. we can prosper only when both come together"

Not only Madhes or Pahade all Nepali need equal rights, respect and opportunities. We are one people and will act as one.

Ramesh Nepali ji I whole heartedly agree with you...I just wish there will be enough pahade realizing this so they can fight back...Also you are right to say that if someone wants a fight the we should give it...but if they want to shake hand then we will return the favor...

"DHOTI NA TOPI HUNU" KO ARTHA:
Some two or three months back, one of my friends called me. What I knew about him is the fact that some 4-5 years back he was a successful businessman. In that phone call he told me that due to the grave situation in the country, his business has totally failed."Dhoti na Topi Vaiyoni, Mitra" he told in conclusion.I assured him with some words of consolation and promised to help as much as possible. From that day this Nepali proverb-"Dhoti na Topi Hunu" is always ringing inside my ears and striking my brain.Suddenly, yesterday I found that this proverb is the most patriotic, the most nationalist and the most unifying proverb among all proverbs in Nepali. "Dhoti" is the symbol of "Madhesi" and "Topi" is the symbol of "Pahade".Practically, nowadays we wear neither dhoti nor topi, but we all wear shirts and pants without any topi. Now I'm so pleasantly surprised to think that how could our people make such a great proverb which is addressed to both communities? We all know the situation in our country which is worsening day by day. Many ethnic groups including Madhesi, Dalit, Janjati and many others want inclusiveness, more rights and autonomy. Some are saying that Khas(Bahun/chhetri)are to be blamed, some are saying Pahade are to be blamed. Some are saying you are the separatist, some are saying you are the nationalist. Everybody is blaming the others for their bad situation and poor life. In this turmoil, this is possible that we all fight each other and by such our activities help to collapse our country. What we must know and must think seriously is that irrespective of which community we belong we all are sons/ daughters of Nepal. Without any of these communities, Nepal will be incomplete, it will not be real Nepal. Our game of blaming each other could lead to a situation, when we will loose our whole nation and then there will be no"Dhoti" and no "Topi". Only then we will understand "Dhoti na Topi Hunu" ko Artha.

I totally agree with dhoti na topi comment. There is another proverb "Na Ghar ko na khat ko".

There is a country called Nepal so we are Nepali. If this country vanish , we will also vanish.

I donot think there is need to discuss on nationality. It is universally known the people living in Nepal are Nepali. There is no other nationality for Nepali people. I wonder why people are confused and worrying for new identity.

All pahad, mountain, hills , plains are teritorial parts of our country. Any body can stay any part of country. We all have single nationality . I wonder why people are wondering about their nationality??

So my dear friends , we should not be fulled by lolly pops of fraud Nepali politicains (Netas).

Politicains in nepal are ethic less. What ever come in their mind, they speak out with out knowing their consequences.

We innocent people are always fulled and now if we donot unite together and speak with strong voice , they will sell out our identity also.

Progress of citizens life will be possible only when we have proper systems in placed in the country. If all systems works properly, the progress is automatic.

Now time has come to act carefully so that national integrity is maintained with proper decentralisation of political powers to local bodies. Let democracy prevails and maintained even at grasss root of governance.

yes, it's true that netas are making it big... and where's the solution ? And me too against single madhes state...and when those netas understand it that, we are Nepali and we love Nepal...
